Steam, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Gift Cards: Which Region Should I Buy?
Updated October 9, 2026.
It depends on the platform. Steam converts a wallet code to your wallet's currency wherever it was bought. PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo only accept a card from the same country or currency as your account. Check your account's country first, then buy the card that matches it.
Which gift cards need to match my account's region?
| Platform | Must the card match your account? | What we sell |
|---|---|---|
| Steam | No: the value converts to your Steam Wallet currency | USD and EUR cards (US, Europe and Global labels) |
| PlayStation | Yes: same country as your account | US cards |
| Xbox / Microsoft | Yes: same currency and region as your Microsoft account | US and Europe cards |
| Nintendo eShop | Yes: same country (Americas) or same currency (Europe) | US and Europe cards |
What counts is the country of your account, not the country you are in. Moving or travelling doesn't change it. Every product page on TopPlayer.gg states the card's region and currency.
Steam gift cards: does the region matter?
Steam says wallet codes "will be converted to the currency of your Steam Wallet upon redemption, regardless of where they were purchased." So a card in dollars can be added to a wallet in euros, and the other way round.
To redeem it:
- Sign in to your Steam account.
- Open Redeem a Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code at store.steampowered.com/account/redeemwalletcode.
- Enter the code and confirm.
Steam's subscriber agreement says wallet funds "are non-refundable and non-transferable", have no cash value, and that your balance plus spending in 24 hours can't go above US$2,000 or the local equivalent. Sources: Steam: redeem a wallet code and Steam Subscriber Agreement.
PlayStation gift cards: do they work in any country?
No. PlayStation says "the voucher code needs to be for the same region as your account", and that it's "not possible to change the region of an account". Our PlayStation Network cards are US cards, so they are for US PlayStation accounts.
To redeem it:
- Web: PlayStation Store, select your profile at the top, choose Redeem Code, enter the 12-digit code and select Continue.
- PS5: PlayStation Store, press the triangle button, then … and Redeem Code.
- PS4: PlayStation Store, then Redeem Codes in the side menu.
Codes are single-use and funds can't be moved between accounts. Your wallet also has a maximum balance; a card that would go over it can't be added until you spend some. Sources: PlayStation: redeem a voucher code and PlayStation: voucher code problems.
Xbox gift cards: can I use a card from another region?
No. Microsoft rejects a card when "the currency in which the gift card was purchased doesn't match the currency used by your Microsoft account", with the message "You need to use a code from your region." A card in euros needs a Microsoft account from a euro country; a card in dollars needs a US account.
To redeem it, go to Microsoft's redeem page, sign in, and enter or paste the code. The balance works across Xbox, Microsoft Store and Windows, and the non-promotional balance doesn't expire.
You can change the country of a Microsoft account, but "the funds in your Microsoft account will not move with you", and you can't change it again within three months. Spend your balance first. Nintendo eShop cards: which one do I need?
The rule depends on where you are. In the Americas, cards "can only be redeemed on systems and/or Nintendo Accounts that are set to that same country", so our US cards are for US Nintendo accounts. In Europe, a card "can be used in any country that uses the same currency", so our euro cards work on accounts from euro countries.
To redeem it, open the Nintendo eShop, choose your account, select Enter Code and type the 16-character code. In the Americas, your eShop balance can't go above $800 USD. Sources: Nintendo Americas: cards by country, Nintendo UK: foreign eShop cards and Nintendo Americas: redeem a code.
How do I check my account's country before buying?
- Steam: Account details shows your store country. It matters less here, because wallet codes convert.
- PlayStation: Account Management, then Your Information and Residential Address.
- Microsoft / Xbox: your Microsoft account profile, under Your info.
- Nintendo: your Nintendo Account settings, under country/region.

What if I bought the wrong region?
A gift card code works like a key: once you reveal it, it can't be returned, so check the region before you reveal it. If the code you received doesn't match the region shown on the product page when you bought it, that counts as "not as described" and is refundable even if you tried to redeem it. Contact support within 30 days and see our refund policy.
