Xbox Game Pass Codes: Plans, How to Redeem and Region Rules

What are the Xbox Game Pass plans and what does each include?

There are four: Essential, Premium, Ultimate and PC Game Pass. On 28 October 2026, xbox.com/xbox-game-pass lists these US prices and features:

The page shows "Get your first 14 days for $1" on every plan, but it adds that promotional offers "may be for new subscribers only", so a code may not get you that deal. The day-one games are select games and exclude Call of Duty titles. Microsoft says that, beginning in 2026, future Call of Duty games join Ultimate and PC Game Pass about a year after launch. Essential and Premium replaced the older Core and Standard plans in October 2025.

How do I redeem an Xbox Game Pass code?

Go to xbox.com/redeem, sign in to the Microsoft account that should get the time, and enter the code. Xbox codes are 25 characters: five blocks of five letters and numbers.

1. On the web: open xbox.com/redeem, sign in and enter the code.
2. On an Xbox console: press the Xbox button, select Store, press the View button, select Redeem, enter the code and select Next.
3. In the Xbox app for Windows: select your gamerpic, then Settings, then Redeem, and enter the code.
4. In the Xbox app for mobile: open your profile, tap the gear icon, select Redeem code and enter the code.

Be careful with the account. Microsoft says: "Make sure that you’re signed in to the correct Microsoft account before redeeming.", and that Xbox Support can't move a redeemed code to another account. You may be asked to add a payment method first, but Microsoft says you "will not accrue additional charges when the code is redeemed". Your code is in My Orders in your TopPlayer account after payment.

Does my Game Pass code have to match my Microsoft account's region?

Often, yes. Microsoft says: "Some codes are meant for a specific country/region that might not match the regional settings on your account." It asks you to make sure the region on your Microsoft account matches your physical location.

For Xbox gift cards the rule is strict. The error page says the card's currency must match the currency of your Microsoft account, and the message is "You need to use a code from your region." How many months of Game Pass can I stack?

It depends on the plan. Microsoft lists these maximums when you extend a subscription with codes or gift cards:

If a code would go past the limit, you get a "Hold off extending this right now" error and must wait until the limit won't be exceeded. Source: Xbox support: subscription extension limits.

What happens if I redeem an Essential code while on Ultimate or Premium?

Your code converts into a shorter time on your current plan. Microsoft says codes for other subscriptions that are included in your plan "will automatically convert" at a set ratio. These are the figures on its conversion page for Essential codes:

The same page says "prepaid time conversion is final and non-refundable, and ratios are subject to change". It also says that when you upgrade to Premium, your Essential time converts at 3:2, up to 13 months. The page lists Core as well as Essential codes in these rows.
