Hearthsteel in World of Warcraft: What It Is, What It Buys and How to Get It

What is Hearthsteel in World of Warcraft?

Blizzard defines it like this: "Hearthsteel is a new virtual currency for World of Warcraft being added in the Midnight expansion." It is "purchased with real money using your Battle.net balance and used in turn to buy Housing items from the Battle.net shop and in-game shop."

So Hearthsteel is a paid currency, separate from the gold you earn in the game. Source: Blizzard: Developer Insight on Hearthsteel and Housing.

Blizzard's shop page describes it the same way: the in-game currency in Midnight, used to acquire Housing items from the shop. Source: Blizzard shop: Hearthsteel.

What can I buy with Hearthsteel?

Only Housing items. Blizzard's shop page says the offering "can only be used within Housing", and that access to Housing requires World of Warcraft: Midnight, sold separately.

Blizzard also says: "Hearthsteel is for Housing. We currently have no plans to use it for the Trading Post, mounts, transmogs, or pets." That was Blizzard's position in its developer post, so check the latest news if you plan to buy for anything else.

Most decor does not cost Hearthsteel. Blizzard says "The VAST majority of Housing items are (and will continue to be) earnable in-game," and that only a small fraction is sold in the shop. Hearthsteel is a shortcut for extra decor, not a requirement for Housing.

Blizzard's decor pack posts add that decor can only be used in the Housing feature and require a World of Warcraft subscription or game time. Source: Blizzard: Dive into Home Design with Starter Decor Packs.

What Hearthsteel pack sizes exist?

On 28 October 2026, Blizzard's shop lists six Hearthsteel packs: 100, 500, 1,000, 2,500, 5,000 and 10,000. Blizzard states the rate as "100 Hearthsteel per $1", so 1,000 Hearthsteel is $10 of value and 10,000 is $100.

We sell the four larger packs. Each one is a Battle.net gift, not a key.

The dollar column is simply Blizzard's 100-per-dollar rate applied to each pack. Our own prices are on each product page. Browse all Blizzard products in Battle.net keys and gifts.

How do I get Hearthsteel?

There are three ways, all described by Blizzard:

• Buy it from Blizzard. Blizzard says it is bought with your Battle.net balance, and its stated aim is that you can buy it in-game, on the web or in the launcher.
• Get it with a WoW Token. Blizzard says Hearthsteel should work with "the normal flow of the WoW Token", so gold you earn in the game can end up as Hearthsteel.
• Buy a pack from us as a gift. We send it to your BattleTag through Battle.net's gift system.

The gift route works like our other Battle.net gifts: you pay, enter your BattleTag on the claim page we email you, accept our friend requests, and wait for Battle.net's friendship period. Expect up to 96 hours; our Hearthsteel product pages state 72 to 96 hours. Then you accept the gift in the Battle.net app. Read the full steps in How Battle.net gifts work.

Is Hearthsteel tied to a region, US or EU?

Blizzard lists Hearthsteel for four regions: Americas and Oceania, Europe, Korea and Taiwan. No Blizzard page we found says whether a Hearthsteel pack bought in one region can be used in another. Treat this as unconfirmed.

What Blizzard does say is about money. "The currency of your Battle.net Balance must be the same as the currency displayed in the Shop to make a purchase." For example, a balance in dollars cannot be used in the European shop, which charges in euro. Source: Blizzard: Battle.net Balance Restrictions.

On gifts, Blizzard says WoW expansions and game time are regional, and that some currencies can only gift to friends who use the same currency. Source: Blizzard: Buying Gifts for Friends in Another Region. Hearthsteel is not an expansion or game time, and Blizzard's page does not list it as regional.

Our four Hearthsteel product pages show the Global label and say "not region-locked", like our other Battle.net gifts. If your account is in an unusual country or you are unsure, ask support before you pay.

How is Hearthsteel different from the WoW Token and game time?

They do three different jobs. Hearthsteel buys Housing decor, the WoW Token turns gold and money into each other, and game time lets you play.

Blizzard's support page says a Token bought in the Shop for real money can be sold on the Auction House for gold, and "Tokens purchased on the Auction house for gold can be redeemed for $15 of Battle.net Balance or 30 days of Game Time." Source: Blizzard: Using a WoW Token.

Balance cannot pay for a WoW subscription, "but can be used for Game Time", per the balance restrictions page above. If you only need to keep playing, see our guide to WoW game time and US vs EU.

What should I check before I buy Hearthsteel?

• You need Midnight to use it. Housing needs World of Warcraft: Midnight, and Blizzard notes the decor needs a subscription or game time.
• You need a BattleTag. Written as Name#1234, and your account must be able to accept friend requests.
• Plan for the wait. Up to 96 hours, and the clock starts when you accept our friend request, not when you pay.
• Pick the pack that matches your plan. Blizzard's rate is the same for every size, so a bigger pack just saves you buying again.

Before the gift is sent, you can ask for a full refund by opening a ticket. Once the gift has been sent to your Battle.net account, it can't be refunded. See our refund policy or contact support.
